Thailand Legalizes Cannabis For Cultivation and Trade
Thailand became the first country in Asia to decriminalize cannabis for commercial and medical use on June 9.
On June 10, the Bangkok Post reported that 1,000 cannabis plants were given away for free in the town of Buri Ram, about 300 kilometers (186 miles) northeast of Bangkok, ahead of a nationwide campaign to distribute 1 million cannabis seedlings.
Footage streamed live by the provincial health office there shows attendees presenting their cannabis products at an expo. More than 30,000 people attended the event, according to a Facebook post by Thai Health Minister Anutin Charnvirakul.
Thailand’s new law allows for the cultivation and possession of cannabis for commercial and medical use.
Health Minister Charnvirakul said in May the move would help to alleviate illnesses and allow for economic growth.
